An 8-Week California Real Estate Exam Study Plan

Use Week 1 to diagnose, Weeks 2 through 6 to pair and test related DRE content areas, Week 7 for mixed speed and a full simulation, and Week 8 for targeted repair, two confirmation mocks, and a taper. This intermediate plan uses an 80-hour example at 10 hours per week. Preserve all seven official weights and start questions on Day 1.

An 8-week plan works only when study and testing begin together

Four compressed phases

Diagnose in Week 1, pair related areas in Weeks 2 through 6, integrate under time in Week 7, then repair and taper in Week 8. Every concept session includes retrieval or questions because there is no separate practice-only month.

Sample budget: 80 hours

Ten hours a week is an illustration, not a DRE requirement. Scale the total to what you can protect, then preserve the official 25, 17, 15, 14, 12, 9, and 8 percent allocation.

This is an intermediate schedule for a candidate with recently completed courses or a usable knowledge base. The California salesperson exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions, allows three hours, and requires at least 70 percent. Eight weeks can organize preparation; it cannot guarantee that a specific learner is ready.

Pass three fit tests before choosing eight weeks

Knowledge

You completed qualifying education recently or can still explain basic ownership, agency, contract, valuation, finance, transfer, and practice concepts.

Time

You can protect about ten focused hours in a normal week and have a recovery block for disruption.

Measurement

You are willing to take a timed baseline now and change the plan when scores contradict confidence.

Choose 12 weeks if two fit tests fail

A compressed plan cannot manufacture foundation or recovery time. Use the 12-week cycle when several areas are new, course completion was long ago, or ten hours repeatedly collides with work, health, or caregiving. A later exam with completed preparation is a better trade than an earlier date supported by unfinished coverage.

The 80-hour example follows DRE weight to the minute

The precision makes the math auditable, not the calendar rigid. Track mixed-question review against the areas tested and round individual sessions sensibly. After a reliable diagnostic, you may move a limited block from a demonstrated strength to a weakness, but keep every area in weekly mixed retrieval.

Compression changes the method, not the examination scope

Pair connected areas

Study Agency with Contracts, Ownership with Transfer, and Valuation with Financing so one scenario exercises both categories.

Test from the first day

There is no long reading phase. Each lesson immediately produces retrieval, a comparison, a calculation, or questions.

Keep artifacts small

Build one transaction map, one formula sheet, one disclosure sequence, and one error log. Do not rewrite the course.

Review before adding volume

A repeated miss stops the question queue until its rule, trap, and retest are recorded.

What eight weeks may cut

It may cut decorative notes, repeated passive reading, broad video marathons, and excess mock volume. It does not cut an official content area, error review, timed practice, current California rules, or full-length simulation.

The complete 8-week schedule

Week

01

Diagnose and stabilize

Take a timed mixed baseline, review every item, and audit DRE's full outline. Use the remaining sessions on the two weakest foundations revealed by the test, not on your favorite chapter.

Required evidence

Seven area scores, five error types, and a ranked repair list

Week

02

Agency plus contracts

Study relationships, authority, duties, disclosures, compensation, and termination beside agreement formation, listings, buyer agreements, offers, options, breach, and remedies. Use role-and-timing scenarios.

Required evidence

Agency-to-contract transaction timeline

Week

03

Ownership plus transfer

Connect estates, vesting, encumbrances, descriptions, government and private controls to deeds, recording, escrow, title insurance, taxation, and court-supervised transfers.

Required evidence

Ownership-to-title concept map

Week

04

Valuation plus financing

Work the three approaches, value principles, depreciation, investment measures, loan instruments, LTV, points, programs, markets, and credit law. Show every calculation step.

Required evidence

Formula sheet built from solved problems

Week

05

Practice and compliance

Cover licensing, supervision, trust funds, records, advertising, unlicensed assistants, discipline, recovery, ethics, technology, property management, and specialty practice.

Required evidence

Compliance deadline and responsibility grid

Week

06

Disclosures plus top-area repair

Study TDS, NHD, material facts, inspection, reports, fair housing, and diverse populations. Use the second half of the week to retest weak Practice, Agency, and Ownership subtopics.

Required evidence

Disclosure sequence plus closed high-weight gaps

Week

07

Mixed speed and first full simulation

Use timed mixed blocks early in the week, then complete one fresh 150-question, three-hour mock. Review it fully and turn repeated misses into a final repair list.

Required evidence

Full simulation report with pace checkpoints

Week

08

Final repair, confirmation, and taper

Repair only evidence-backed gaps, complete two fresh full simulations on separate days, revisit the official outline, and reduce study volume in the final 24 hours.

Required evidence

Two reviewed simulations and an exam-day routine

A 10-hour week that survives a normal job

BlockTimeJob
Three weekday sessions3 × 90 min = 4h 30mFocused learning, retrieval, and area questions
Two short repair sessions2 × 45 min = 1h 30mError-log retests, term pairs, and calculations
Weekend deep block2h 30mMixed timed set, review, and weekly artifact
Recovery block1h 30mReserved for disruption or used for targeted review if untouched

A recovery block is part of the ten hours, not imaginary extra capacity. If the week runs cleanly, use it for spaced retests. If work or family takes a session, move that named task into recovery instead of rebuilding the entire calendar.

Run each 90-minute block in five parts

  1. 0110 minClosed-book recallWrite the rules or steps retained from the prior session.
  2. 0225 minBounded instructionLearn one narrow topic from a current and reliable source.
  3. 0330 minApplicationAnswer focused questions or solve worked scenarios without copying steps.
  4. 0415 minExplanationExplain the right answer and eliminate each distractor.
  5. 0510 minLog and scheduleRecord the error cause, corrected rule, and retest date.

Let the Week 1 baseline modify, not replace, official weight

Rank gaps by weighted consequence

Record accuracy within each area and note the types of errors. A weak result in the 25-percent area deserves more repair than the same weakness in the 8-percent area, but a strong baseline does not justify deleting either one. Keep a minimum retrieval touch for every area each week.

  • Knowledge: the governing concept was missing.
  • Reading: a qualifier, role, or timing word was overlooked.
  • Confusion: two similar terms or duties were reversed.
  • Calculation: the formula, units, arithmetic, or rounding failed.
  • Timing: the answer was rushed, abandoned, or never reached.

Use three full mocks, each with a different job

End of Week 7

Expose

Reveal full-length pacing, fatigue, and the last repeated rule gaps.

Middle of Week 8

Confirm

Test the repaired rules in a fresh set without recognition from the first mock.

Early final days

Rehearse

Confirm routine and timing, then leave enough recovery before the live exam.

Use 150 questions and a three-hour limit for simulation. DRE requires at least 70 percent on the live test. This site's preparation target is 80 percent on two fresh full mocks, without repeated collapse in a major area. That buffer is editorial and cannot predict a DRE result.

Seven compression mistakes that ruin an 8-week plan

Choosing eight weeks because it sounds efficient

Use it only when the knowledge, time, and measurement fit tests pass.

Cutting Transfer or Financing

Lower weight is not zero weight, and both connect to larger transactional scenarios.

Watching at double speed without retrieval

Playback completion does not establish usable exam knowledge.

Building beautiful notes

Compressed preparation needs small decision tools and corrected errors, not a rewritten textbook.

Taking random quizzes without area tracking

A total score cannot tell you where weighted risk is accumulating.

Saving full-length timing for the last weekend

Week 7 must expose pace and fatigue early enough to change them.

Using extra hours as punishment

Recovery and sleep support the next session; exhaustion is not evidence of preparation.

Start the eight-week clock with a baseline, not a promise

Prove the plan fits in Week 1

Put all ten hours on the calendar, take the mixed baseline, and complete its review. If the first week cannot hold the work or reveals several new foundations, switch to the 12-week schedule while there is still time to gain from the change.
