What Identification Does California DRE Accept on Exam Day?

California DRE accepts a valid current state-issued driver's license or DMV identification card, a US passport or passport issued by a foreign government, or a US military identification card. DRE says only these listed photo IDs are accepted and candidates without one will not be admitted. Its Fresno page also says the ID must have been issued within the past five years.

DRE accepts only three categories of photo identification

State ID

Current state-issued driver's license or DMV identification card

Passport

U.S. passport or passport issued by a foreign government

Military ID

U.S. military identification card

To enter a California DRE examination, show a valid photo ID from the published list: a current state-issued driver's license or DMV identification card, a US or foreign-government passport, or a US military identification card. DRE says only these forms are accepted and that a candidate without listed valid photo ID will not be admitted.

The closed list, read carefully

Current state-issued driver's license

A current driver's license issued by a US state. DRE does not limit the published wording to California.

Current state-issued DMV identification card

A current non-driver identification card issued by a state motor vehicle agency.

U.S. passport

DRE lists a U.S. passport as an accepted photo-identification category.

Passport issued by a foreign government

A foreign-government passport is expressly included in DRE's accepted list.

U.S. military identification card

DRE lists a US military identification card as the third accepted category.

State-issued does not say California-issued

DRE's wording is “current state-issued driver's license or DMV identification card.” It does not say the credential must be issued by California. A current qualifying ID from another US state fits the published category.

Check validity before the morning of the exam

  1. 01Choose one listed credentialDo not begin with an unlisted substitute and hope the center makes an exception.
  2. 02Inspect its statusConfirm it is current, intact, readable, and carries a recognizable photo.
  3. 03Check the appointment identityDRE requires applicants to use their legal name. If the application, schedule, and ID appear inconsistent, contact DRE before the appointment because the public ID page does not publish a mismatch exception.
  4. 04Review center-specific languageOpen the current page for the booked center. DRE's Fresno page adds that the valid photo ID must have been issued within the past five years.
  5. 05Carry the physical IDDRE does not publish a digital-wallet or photocopy exception. Keep the credential accessible for check-in before storing prohibited belongings.
  6. 06Arrive on timeDRE says sessions begin promptly and asks candidates to arrive 30 minutes early.

One official center page adds a five-year issue-date condition

Fresno wording

The current Fresno examination-site page says candidates must show valid photo identification “issued within the past 5 years” before repeating the same three accepted categories.

Safe response

DRE's main Taking the Exam page and several other center pages do not print that extra sentence. If your listed credential was issued more than five years ago, especially for Fresno, confirm acceptance with DRE or use another listed credential that clearly satisfies the narrower wording.

Do not rely on these unlisted substitutes

Unlisted itemWhy it is unsafe to rely on
Temporary paper driver's licenseDRE's closed list says current state-issued driver's license and requires photo identification. A paper temporary document is not separately listed.
Digital driver's license or wallet imageDRE does not publish a digital-ID exception on the examination page. Do not rely on a phone that must also be powered off and stored.
Photocopy, scan, or photograph of IDA copy is not named as an accepted form. Bring the physical credential rather than expecting a reproduction to substitute.
School or employee IDNeither category appears in DRE's accepted list, even when it carries a photo.
Professional license or real estate course cardA credential showing training or employment is not one of DRE's admission IDs.
Birth certificate or Social Security cardThese may prove identity in other settings but are not photo IDs on DRE's accepted examination list.
Credit or debit cardA payment card does not satisfy the published photo-identification requirement.
Examination schedule notice by itselfThe notice confirms appointment information. It does not replace one of the listed photo IDs.

“Unlisted” is the controlling point. DRE states that only its named forms will be accepted. This article does not invent a rejection anecdote for every document or claim that an unlisted item can never support a separate conversation with DRE. It is not a safe admission plan.

Three passport questions require restraint

Foreign passports

Expressly accepted when issued by a foreign government and valid as photo identification.

Passport cards

DRE says U.S. passport but does not separately name a U.S. passport card. Confirm rather than expanding the closed list yourself.

Older passports

A still-valid passport can be older than five years, while Fresno adds a five-year issue condition. Use the narrower safe response above.

Resolve a name or identity concern before check-in

DRE center pages cite the rule requiring an applicant's legal name and the statute prohibiting deception or fraud concerning examination identity. They do not publish a complete same-day procedure for a shortened name, recent marriage, suffix difference, transliteration, or corrected record. Contact the DRE Examination Section early, explain the exact documents, and follow the agency's direction rather than bringing an extra unlisted document and assuming it cures the issue.
