Can You Get a California Real Estate License Online? What Is Online and What Is Not

You can complete much of the California salesperson licensing process online, but not the entire process. Qualifying education may be offered online, and DRE accepts online applications, uploads, payments, and scheduling through eLicensing. Fingerprinting requires a physical Live Scan or fingerprint-card process, and the California real estate examination is taken in person at a DRE examination center, not from home.

Online does not mean remote from beginning to end

Education and filing

Much of this can happen online through an approved school and DRE eLicensing.

Fingerprints

Your identity and fingerprints require an approved physical collection process.

DRE examination

The test is electronic at the center, but it is not a remote online exam.

Electronic and online are not synonyms here

DRE administers salesperson examinations electronically at physical examination centers. DRE separately states that the real estate exam is not offered online. A website promising an at-home California DRE licensing exam is describing something other than the official examination.

You can take qualifying courses online, but verify the exact offering

DRE recognizes correspondence courses, including courses presented through the internet. For the standard salesperson path, the education still has to cover Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one approved elective. Online delivery changes where you study, not what must qualify.

DRE's course-provider instructions require controls that make students complete each internet-course segment before moving forward. Online final examinations must protect identity and integrity, cannot be printable or downloadable, and must time out after the allotted period. This is why a legitimate course may lock progression or require identity checks even when the marketing page calls it self-paced.

Search the DRE database for the exact provider, course type, and statutory subject. Do not stop at the school's homepage or a general statement that the provider is accredited. DRE approval applies to specific offerings, and continuing education is not a substitute for pre-license education.

The application can be completed through eLicensing

DRE's online workflow supports both the examination-only and combined examination and license routes. You create or sign in to an eLicensing profile, select the salesperson application, answer the application questions, upload education and supporting records, certify the information, and pay electronically.

After DRE approves examination eligibility, eLicensing also lets you see or select an available date, reschedule, and print the barcoded schedule notice. Moving the filing online can reduce mailing and data-entry friction. It does not waive a missing record, shorten the course requirement, guarantee a processing time, or turn the examination into a remote test.

The official examination is in person

DRE's answer is unambiguous: the real estate examination is not offered online. The current salesperson exam is administered electronically in Fresno, the Los Angeles vicinity, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Diego. You travel to the assigned or selected examination site, check in with acceptable identification, and test under DRE controls.

A remote school final is not the state licensing examination. Passing Principles, Practice, and the elective proves the education requirement. Passing the DRE salesperson examination is a separate licensing gate with 150 multiple-choice questions and a three-hour limit.

Fingerprints remain a physical step

California residents generally take the Live Scan Service Request, RE 237, to a Live Scan provider. The provider captures the fingerprints and transmits them through the approved system. You may complete related application work online, but you cannot press your fingers against a laptop and satisfy this requirement.

Applicants outside California can use California Live Scan when physically present or follow DRE's fingerprint-card process from another state. They must also handle the notarized Consent to Service of Process, RE 234. That route makes California licensing available to nonresidents, but it does not make the fingerprint or examination steps remote.

DRE controls correspondence-course completion and requires approved hours and progression.

Our school approval covers every course

Before enrolling in an online course

  • Find the exact course and provider in DRE's statutory-course search.
  • Confirm the offering is pre-license education, not continuing education.
  • Verify that Real Estate Practice includes the current fair housing and implicit bias components.
  • Ask when each final becomes available and how identity is verified.
  • Ask what happens after one or two failed course finals.
  • Confirm how and when completion certificates are issued.
  • Read the refund terms and list of required add-on charges.
  • Plan travel for Live Scan and the in-person DRE examination.
