Social Security Number or ITIN: What California DRE Accepts

California DRE accepts either a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for an individual salesperson license application. You do not need both. Current RE 435 and RE 202 instructions require one identifier for licensure, while paper RE 400A ties its identifier field to eLicensing. DRE does not require proof of citizenship or immigration status.

California DRE accepts an SSN or an ITIN

Social Security number

Accepted for an individual salesperson license application. Use your own SSN exactly as requested on the current DRE form.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

Also accepted for an individual salesperson license application. You do not need an SSN in addition to a valid ITIN for this DRE field.

Business and Professions Code section 30 requires DRE to collect either an individual taxpayer identification number or a Social Security number from an individual applying for a license. The current combined RE 435 and post-exam RE 202 license forms follow that rule. They ask for one or the other, not both.

The requirement changes slightly by application stage

Stage and formWhat the current form saysPractical meaning
Paper exam-only application, RE 400AItem 3 accepts an SSN or ITIN and marks it as required to use eLicensing. The paper form ties the field to online account functions. It does not remove the identifier requirement at the later license stage.
Combined exam and license application, RE 435Item 1 requires an SSN or individual taxpayer ID number.Provide one identifier when filing because this route already includes the original license application.
License application after passing, RE 202The instructions state that submission of an SSN or ITIN is required.DRE cannot process the initial license application without the requested identifier.

Exam eligibility and license issuance are different questions

A paper RE 400A applicant may see the identifier described in connection with eLicensing, but every candidate ultimately needs an SSN or ITIN to obtain the original salesperson license. Passing the examination does not waive the license-stage rule.

Why DRE collects the number and who may receive it

It is not a public license record

Section 30 says an SSN or ITIN furnished under the law is not a public record and is not open for public inspection. A consumer looking up your DRE license should not see the number.

It is not kept only inside DRE

California law authorizes specified government uses and disclosures. DRE may furnish licensee information to the Franchise Tax Board or Employment Development Department, and the statute lists additional limited purposes. RE 202A also explains the tax identification and tax-delinquency matching uses. Privacy does not mean no authorized agency can receive the number.

Do not send the number in an ordinary email

Use DRE's current application or secure process. If DRE asks you to correct an identifier, follow the contact method in the notice or confirm the secure method with DRE. Do not put a full SSN or ITIN into a public web form, chat message, or unverified email reply.

Five checks before you submit the application

  1. 01Use an SSN if the Social Security Administration has issued one to you.
  2. 02Use an ITIN if the IRS has issued one to you and you are not eligible for an SSN.
  3. 03Enter only your own identifier. An EIN, school number, DRE file number, or another person's number is not a substitute.
  4. 04Match your legal name and date of birth to the records connected with the identifier as closely as the form allows.
  5. 05Never enter a placeholder number to move past an online field. An inaccurate application can create a larger problem than a missing document.

If your name has changed, preserve the supporting record and use the instructions on the form you are filing. If eLicensing cannot match a valid ITIN or your existing DRE record, contact DRE before creating a second account or filing a duplicate paid application.

What to do if you have neither an SSN nor an ITIN

Do not invent a number

A fake, borrowed, or placeholder identifier can make the application inaccurate and can interfere with identity matching.

Check SSN eligibility first

The IRS says an ITIN is for a person who needs a US taxpayer identification number but is not eligible for an SSN.

Plan around issuance

DRE cannot process the initial license application without the requested SSN or ITIN, even if you completed the courses and passed the exam.

DRE does not issue ITINs. The IRS owns that process, and its eligibility rules are separate from California real estate licensing. Use the IRS's current guidance or qualified tax help rather than treating a DRE application deadline as proof that you qualify for an ITIN.

Choose the application route with the identifier stage in view

Have one valid identifier ready before the license filing

If you file the combined RE 435, the SSN or ITIN belongs in that application. If you use paper RE 400A for the exam first, remember that the identifier is still required when you file RE 202 for the license. Review the complete route and use the current DRE form, not a saved copy from an older course or forum.
