Use a practiced response plan, not a demand to feel calm
Before the exam
Reduce uncertainty and rehearse the full testing conditions
During a spike
Pause, settle, name the task, and make one observable move
Beyond ordinary nerves
Seek qualified support when symptoms persist or interfere with daily life
A candidate-safe California real estate exam anxiety plan has three parts: remove preventable uncertainty before test day, rehearse a brief in-room reset, and get qualified help when anxiety is persistent, severe, or interfering with everyday life. You do not need to force yourself to feel perfectly calm. You need a small next action that returns attention to the question. This is preparation guidance, not diagnosis or treatment.
NIMH, anxiety, ordinary worry, impairment, and help resources · checked 2026-08-27Ordinary exam stress and a health condition are not interchangeable labels
| Situation | Safe role for this guide | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional test-day worry | Offer logistics, rehearsal, pacing, attention, and general coping steps. | Do not diagnose a disorder from nervousness. |
| Persistent or worsening symptoms | Encourage discussion with a health care professional and early DRE accommodation planning when relevant. | Do not recommend medication, treatment, dosage, or a clinical technique. |
| Crisis or immediate danger | Direct the person to immediate crisis or emergency help. | Exam preparation is no longer the priority. |
Build five layers before relying on an in-room technique
- 01Remove preventable uncertaintyConfirm the center, accepted ID, route, belongings, computer workflow, and 30-minute arrival plan before the morning.
- 02Rehearse the real formatUse fresh 150-question, three-hour mocks so sustained attention, checkpoints, and recovery are familiar behaviors.
- 03Name your early signalsIdentify what you actually do under pressure, such as rereading, rushing, holding your breath, checking the timer repeatedly, or freezing between two choices.
- 04Assign one responsePair each signal with a small action you have practiced: pause, take a comfortable slow breath, restate the task, eliminate one choice, or move and revisit.
- 05Arrange support earlyIf a disability-related limitation may require examination accommodation, use DRE's RE 413 process with the required documentation before testing.
A five-step reset for the next question
Pause
Stop clicking for a moment. A short intentional pause is different from abandoning the question.
Settle
Place both feet or another comfortable point of contact, loosen your grip, and take a slow breath without forcing a count that feels uncomfortable.
Name the task
Ask what the stem requires: the true statement, false statement, exception, first action, best choice, or calculation.
Make one move
Underline mentally the limiting word, eliminate one unsupported option, write the calculation relationship, or choose and continue.
Return to the clock later
Check progress at the next planned block checkpoint rather than using the timer to judge every question.
Practice this before the live examination
CDC includes deep breathing, stretching, meditation, routine, sleep, activity, and social connection among general healthy ways to cope with stress. Individuals respond differently. Use only a brief, comfortable method you have already practiced, and follow personal medical guidance when applicable.
Replace predictions with instructions
| Pressure statement | Operational replacement |
|---|---|
| “My mind went blank, so I am failing.” | “I have one difficult item. I will restate its task and make one elimination.” |
| “Everyone else is faster.” | “Other candidates are not my clock. I will check my next 25-question checkpoint.” |
| “I must know this immediately.” | “I can choose the best supported answer, move, and revisit for a defined reason.” |
| “Feeling anxious means I am not ready.” | “Readiness comes from coverage, fresh mocks, review, and pacing evidence, not one feeling.” |
Know what you can do inside the controlled room
Use the verified tools
DRE's system description includes a countdown plus total, answered, and remaining counters. Check them on planned intervals.
Use question behavior
Read the exact task, identify the governing rule, eliminate unsupported choices, and protect completion.
Speak only to the proctor
DRE's rule bars communication with others in the room except an examination proctor. If you need instruction or become unwell, notify the proctor and follow directions.
Telling a proctor that you feel unwell does not automatically create extra time, a private room, a break, or another accommodation. The proctor and any preapproved arrangement control what happens next.
Request disability-related arrangements before test day
DRE Form RE 413
DRE provides reasonable accommodations for examination applicants with disabilities after accommodation needs are documented. The applicant is responsible for notifying DRE, and the form describes when professional verification is required.
No automatic diagnosis or approval
This guide cannot determine whether a condition qualifies, what arrangement is reasonable, or whether DRE will approve a request. Discuss health needs with a qualified professional and submit the agency process early.
Know when an exam guide is not enough
NIMH says occasional anxiety is a normal part of life, while anxiety that persists or begins to interfere with daily activities is a reason to seek professional help. If you have thoughts of suicide or urges to hurt yourself, call or text 988 or use 988lifeline.org. Call 911 in a life-threatening situation. These resources take priority over an exam date.
Eight anxiety-plan mistakes that add pressure
Demanding zero anxiety before beginning
Using reassurance instead of fresh full-mock evidence
Testing an unfamiliar breathing count or coping technique in the live room
Checking the timer after every difficult question
Treating another candidate's speed as performance evidence
Changing answers to relieve discomfort rather than because evidence changed
Waiting until check-in to request a disability-related arrangement
Using a study article in place of professional or crisis support
Practice the response while the outcome does not count
Rehearse under the full clock
Use a full mock to practice the brief reset, block checkpoints, provisional choices, and return to the task before exam day.
