Verify approval first, then compare the student experience
Verify each course
Search DRE's statutory course database for the private provider and the exact Principles, Practice, and elective courses you plan to buy.
Check enforcement history
Review DRE's formal and pending action list before paying a private education provider.
Compare fit
Evaluate format, access, support, total price, exam policy, certificate delivery, and refund terms after eligibility is confirmed.
For a private real estate school, DRE approval is course-specific. A familiar brand name, national accreditation claim, broker recommendation, social-media following, or promise that a package is California-ready does not replace the DRE database. Approval establishes that the listed course meets the licensing education requirement. It does not tell you whether the portal, teaching, support, or price is right for you.
DRE, approved statutory and pre-license course search · checked 2026-08-27Two education routes can qualify, and approval works differently
| Route | What makes the course eligible | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Accredited college or university | A three-semester-unit or four-quarter-unit college-level course through an appropriately accredited institution | Accreditation, official course title and description, units, term, tuition, schedule, and transcript process |
| Private vocational real estate school | The specific minimum 45-hour course has formal approval from the California Real Estate Commissioner | Provider number, course number, course type, subject, approval listing, delivery format, and any formal or pending action |
Do not confuse pre-license education with continuing education
Continuing education courses are for license renewal and do not satisfy the three college-level courses required for an original salesperson examination. In the DRE database, search the statutory or pre-license catalog, not the CE catalog.
A five-minute DRE verification workflow
- 01
Search the provider
Use the legal provider name or DRE provider number. A marketing brand may differ from the approved entity, so ask the seller to identify the record.
- 02
Select statutory course type
Keep the search within salesperson and broker pre-license courses. A CE approval does not establish original-license eligibility.
- 03
Confirm all three subjects
Verify Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and the exact elective. Do not assume that approval of one course covers an entire bundle.
- 04
Match format and provider
Confirm that the listing belongs to the entity taking your payment and that the advertised delivery method matches the approved offering.
- 05
Check formal and pending actions
Open DRE's provider-action list from the search page. Read the status and affected approval instead of relying on reviews alone.
Save a dated PDF or screenshot of the DRE results, the school's general information page, the package description, and the refund policy. Approval can change, and a preserved record helps resolve a later certificate, advertising, or complaint issue.

Choose the delivery format you will actually finish
| Format | Good fit when | Ask before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled live class | You learn through instruction, discussion, deadlines, and a fixed cohort | Attendance policy, missed-class remedy, location or meeting platform, instructor, and final schedule |
| Correspondence or self-paced | You can study independently and want control over daily timing | Minimum completion dates, final-exam process, included attempts, materials, and support response time |
| Internet-administered course | You want browser-based lessons, tracked navigation, and incremental assessments | Required navigation hours, device support, outage handling, assessment rules, and progress portability |
| Community college | You value academic credit, instructor contact, and a structured term | Residency tuition, enrollment dates, section availability, units, transcript timing, and whether the Practice course meets current content rules |
No legitimate self-paced package creates a three-day license path
DRE says no single correspondence course may be completed in less than 2.5 weeks and no more than two may be completed in any five-week period. Three correspondence courses therefore have a 7.5-week regulatory floor. Exam application, scheduling, fingerprints, and license review come afterward.
Turn the advertised price into an all-in quote
Course package price
+ required materials + shipping + proctoring + retakes + extensions + certificate fees = education total
Ask for the answer in writing. A low headline price can be fair when the course is genuinely self-service, or expensive when required services appear at checkout. A higher price can be worthwhile when it includes live instruction and responsive support. Compare the package that gets you through all three certificates, not the cheapest first screen.
Twelve questions to ask before paying
- 01What DRE provider number and course numbers cover my exact three-course package?
- 02Does the Real Estate Practice course satisfy the post-2024 fair housing, implicit bias, and interactive participation requirements?
- 03Is the delivery format live, correspondence, or internet-administered, and what must I complete before each final exam opens?
- 04What is the earliest lawful completion date for each course and for all three courses?
- 05What does the advertised price exclude, including textbooks, shipping, proctoring, retakes, extensions, or certificate replacement?
- 06How long will I have course access, and what happens if that access expires before completion?
- 07How are instructor or student-support questions handled, and during which hours?
- 08How many final-exam attempts are included, what is the passing score, and what happens after an unsuccessful attempt?
- 09How and when is identity verified for coursework and final examinations?
- 10When will the school issue each completion certificate, and how can an error be corrected?
- 11What is the written cancellation and refund policy?
- 12What accessibility support and language options are available for the course itself?
Seven reasons to stop before checkout
The seller will not provide a DRE provider and course number
You should be able to match every private pre-license course to DRE's statutory database.
Only continuing education approval is shown
CE is not a substitute for original-license qualifying education.
The school promises completion faster than DRE allows
Marketing cannot override the correspondence-course limits or the required online course mechanics.
The package hides the elective or Practice course version
All three subjects must qualify, and the Practice course must include current statutory content.
Refund, retake, or extension terms appear only after payment
Material buying terms should be available before the transaction.
The provider sells a guaranteed exam pass or guaranteed license
A school cannot control your DRE application, exam performance, fingerprints, background review, or license decision.
The course uses outdated California law or misleading advertising
Preserve examples, contact the provider, and use DRE's education-provider complaint process if the issue is not resolved.
Protect the certificate before you need it
Enroll under the legal name you plan to use with DRE. After each course, inspect the certificate for your name, provider, course title, completion date, and identifying course information. Save the original file and a backup outside the school portal. Request a correction immediately while the account and supporting records are still easy to access.
Verify the shortlist before comparing features
Approval is the entry ticket, not the final score
Start with DRE's approved statutory course search. Remove any private package whose exact three courses cannot be verified. Then compare two or three remaining options using the same format, support, price, exam, access, certificate, and refund questions. The best school is the verified one whose course mechanics fit the way you will consistently study.
