Updates

Two kinds of change matter here. Changes to California rules and fees, which make previously correct pages wrong, and changes to this site. Both are recorded.

Rule and fee changes that affect candidates

July 1, 2024

DRE fees increased for the first time since 1997

The examination fee moved to $100 and the licence fee to $350, making the combined RE 435 filing $450. Signed into law June 29, 2024. Because the previous figures had stood for twenty-seven years, pre-increase numbers are embedded across the web and in printed material, and budgeting from them understates the cost substantially.

Implicit bias and fair housing components required in the Practice course

The Real Estate Practice course must now include implicit bias and fair housing components, and the fair housing component must include interactive participatory role play as both consumer and real estate professional. A course built before this date and not updated does not satisfy the requirement.

Residential security deposit cap reduced to one month's rent

The cap became one month's rent whether the unit is furnished or unfurnished, with a narrow exception allowing up to two months for a natural person owning no more than two residential properties totalling no more than four units. The previous two-month and three-month figures still appear in a great deal of study material.

Full verification pass

Every governed fact checked against its cited DRE page. All 7 content-area guides authored in full, 200 practice questions across every area, 30 working tools, and 67 glossary terms. Two facts remain deliberately unpublished: a first-time pass rate and the continuing education hour requirement, both for want of a DRE source.

What is still outstanding

Stated openly rather than left as a gap

  • Verifying the continuing education requirement so the renewal page can be completed
  • Counsel review of the privacy, terms and refunds pages, all of which are drafts
  • Confirming the app price and store links
  • Broker or attorney sign-off on the seven authored content-area guides
  • The 4 tools listed as planned on the tools page
  • A full keyboard traversal and screen reader audit, noted on the accessibility page
